What You Need to Know March 7, 2026 5 min read 1,385 views Learn about infrared sauna safety, EMF levels, medical considerations, and who should avoid infrared heat therapy. A complete safety guide backed by science. Image: Is Infrared Sauna Safe? What You Need to Know - REDSOL Wellness Club League City TX (https://redsolwellness.club/blog-images/infrared-sauna-woman-towel.jpeg) If you're considering infrared sauna therapy for the first time, safety is likely your top concern — and rightfully so. The good news? **Infrared saunas are widely considered safe** for most healthy adults when used properly, and decades of clinical research support their therapeutic use. At REDSOL Wellness Club in League City, TX (https://redsolwellness.club/services/infrared-sauna), we use medical-grade infrared sauna technology designed to meet the highest safety standards. Here's everything you need to know about infrared sauna safety before your first session. ## How Infrared Saunas Differ From UV Radiation One of the most common misconceptions is confusing infrared light with ultraviolet (UV) radiation. They're completely different: - **UV radiation** (from the sun or tanning beds) damages DNA, causes sunburn, and increases skin cancer risk - **Infrared light** is on the opposite end of the electromagnetic spectrum — it produces gentle, therapeutic heat without any UV exposure - Infrared is the same type of heat your body naturally emits and receives from sunlight (minus the harmful rays) In fact, infrared technology has been used safely in hospitals for decades, including neonatal intensive care units to warm premature infants. ## What About EMF Exposure? Electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure is a valid concern with any electrical device. Here's what the science says: - **High-quality infrared saunas** are designed with low-EMF or ultra-low-EMF heaters that fall well below safety thresholds - The World Health Organization considers EMF levels below 100 milligauss safe for prolonged exposure - Premium infrared saunas typically emit 0.5–3 milligauss — far below safety limits - At REDSOL, our saunas are tested and certified for ultra-low EMF emissions ## Clinical Classification and Research Infrared saunas are classified as Class II medical devices, the same category as powered wheelchairs and blood pressure monitors. This classification means they've undergone rigorous review for safety. Clinical studies published in peer-reviewed journals — including the _Journal of the American College of Cardiology_ and the _Journal of Clinical Rheumatology_ — have documented the safety profile of infrared sauna therapy across thousands of sessions. ## Medical Considerations: Who Should Be Cautious While infrared saunas are safe for most people, certain conditions warrant caution or medical clearance: ### Consult Your Doctor First If You: - Are pregnant or trying to conceive - Have cardiovascular disease or recent heart events - Take medications that affect sweating or heat regulation (diuretics, beta-blockers, anticholinergics) - Have multiple sclerosis or other heat-sensitive neurological conditions - Have hemophilia or bleeding disorders - Have a fever or active infection ### Generally Safe For: - Healthy adults of all fitness levels - People with arthritis, fibromyalgia, or chronic pain (often recommended) - Athletes and active individuals - People with mild to moderate hypertension (studies show benefit) - Those seeking stress relief and relaxation ## How to Use Infrared Sauna Safely Following these guidelines ensures a safe, enjoyable experience: 1. **Hydrate before, during, and after** — Drink at least 16–24 oz of water before your session. We provide water at REDSOL. 2. **Start with shorter sessions** — Beginners should start at 15–20 minutes and gradually work up to 30 minutes. 3. **Listen to your body** — If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseous, exit the sauna immediately. 4. **Avoid alcohol before sessions** — Alcohol impairs your body's ability to regulate temperature. 5. **Remove metal jewelry** — Metal can heat up and cause discomfort. 6. **Cool down gradually** — Don't jump into cold water immediately. Allow your body to cool naturally. ### Your first session is $29 at REDSOL Wellness Club in League City, TX. Our team will guide you through every step. New to REDSOL?
